Configuring Yahoo to use your custom hostname
Text Instructions
- Log in to your account at smallbusiness.yahoo.com.
- Click Domain Control Panel below the domain you'd like to use with your blog.
- Click Manage Advanced DNS Settings.
- Click Add Record.
- In the Source field, enter only the subdomain you want to use. For example, if you want to use www.mydomain.com as the address of your SmugMug site, enter www in the Source field.
- Enter domains.smugmug.com in the Destination field.
- Click Submit.
- If you want to use yourdomain.com without a subdomain, you will need to add an A record. Leave the Source field blank and enter 208.79.45.23
- Click Submit.
- Log out of Yahoo
- Wait at least 30 minutes, then head on back to SmugMug, login, and click on the 'Control Panel' button on your SmugMug homepage.
Select the 'Settings' tab, and click the 'change' link next to the word 'domain'. In the Custom hostname field, enter your full domain name in lowercase. - It can take24-48 hours for a domain to start working so step 10 may not work right away.
Graphical Instructions
1) Log into your Yahoo account
2) Head to your Advanced DNS Settings, shown at left.
It can usually be found by accessing "Your premium services" but it may be different depending on your Yahoo/AT&T/SBC account.

2) Let's make sure your domain is not forwarding anywhere. Click on 'Forward Your Domain' .

3 ) Delete any forwarding in place using the 'Delete' link under 'Actions'. The page should look like this when you are done.
Click 'Advanced DNS Settings' . Or, you can go back to your Domain Control Panel and click on 'Manage Advanced DNS Settings'.

You should see three sections; A and CNAME Records, MX Records, and last, Name Servers, pictured here.
You should be using the default Yahoo name servers, which appear similar to the primary and secondary name servers shown here.
4) If you're not, or you're unsure, 'Unlock' your domain if it's locked, and use the 'Reset to Default' button.

In the A and CNAME Records section, be sure yours look like the ones pictured.
5) These are Yahoo's default settings. If yours look different, use the 'Reset to Default' button.
Gotcha: If you have another website that uses your domain and you'd like to keep it, that's not a problem. Instead of redirecting 'www' in the next step, enter a new subdomain, such as 'photos' and use that in place of www below.

6) Click on 'Add Record' and the following screen should come up.
In the Source box enter: www
In the Destination box enter: domains.smugmug.com .
NOT yournickname.smugmug.com .
Then click Submit. It will ask you to confirm. Click Submit again.

You should now see your new CNAME record for www pointing to domains.smugmug.com as seen here on the bottom.
7) Optional - If you'd like
http://yourdomain.com to point to your SmugMug site, in addition to
http://www.yourdomain.com, find the A record entry with yourdomain.com and click

In the destination box, enter SmugMug's IP address: 208.79.45.23 and click 'Submit'.

Check that both the new CNAME record and the (optional) A Record reflect the changes we just made.
We're done on Yahoo!

8) Wait at least 30 minutes, then head on back to SmugMug, login, and click on the 'Control Panel' button on your SmugMug homepage.
Select the 'Settings' tab, and click the 'change' link next to the word 'domain'.
In the Custom hostname field, enter your full domain name in lowercase, including the www as shown here, or whatever subdomain you indicated in step 6, above.

Uh oh! What happened?
If you see this message:
"Warning: That hostname doesn't resolve to SmugMug. This may cause problems with your custom hostname setting. See our help section on custom hostnames."
Don't worry. If you followed the previous instructions, this likely means that the changes you made at Yahoo haven't had time to spread across the Internet yet. Sometimes this can take a full 48 hours, so try again in a little while.
You should then see, "Pro features updated!" and you're done. Open a new browser tab or window and type in your custom domain name, and you should end up at your SmugMug page, with your new domain name in the browser's address bar. Congrats!
